Ahanpee State ATV Trail

This 48 mile trail is county operated and begins in downtown Sturgeon Bay. While walking the trail along the Ahnapee and and Kewaunee rivers you will pass through a varied countryside of farmland, prairies wooded ares and evergreen glades. You have a good chance of seeing wildlife will walking the trail. Near Sunset Road in Kewaunee County, the trail branches off in three directions, west to Luxemburg, northeast towards Algoma and southeast towards the city of Kewaunee. I trail pass is not required to walk this trail. Use good trail etiquette since there may be many different people walking the trail at the same time so use good trail etiquette.
Horseback riding is allowed on this trail from April 15 to November 15. Don't use the trails in rainy weather to reduce damage to the trail. Please pick up after your horse. Snowmobies may also use the trail. The trail also connects to numerous miles of county snowmobile trails.
Hunting and trapping are not allowed on the trail corridor. A portion of the Ahnapee State Trail property in the town of Algoma is more than 100 yards from the trail corridor. This portion is open to hunting and trapping during the Wisconsin state parks hunting time frame.

A portion of the Ahnapee State Trail property in the town of Algoma is more than 100 yards from the trail corridor. This portion is open to hunting and trapping during the Wisconsin state parks hunting time frame.

Directions

Sturgeon Bay: The Sturgeon Bay trailhead and parking lot is just south of the city along Neenah Avenue. The trail continues north off the rail corridor along Neenah Avenue and other city streets, crossing State Highways 42/57, into the city of Sturgeon Bay. Sturgeon Bay Detail - Door County Parks [exit DNR].

Forestville: There is parking at the Forestville Dam County Park adjacent to the Ahnapee State Trail.

Algoma: There are three parking areas available near Algoma, along County Highway M just north of the city, on Navarino Street in Algoma and at the Algoma trailhead.

Casco: Parking is available on County Highway C (Church Street) near the trail.

Sunset Road: Parking is available at Harold Reckelberg Park on Sunset Road in Casco Junction, at the junction where the trail forks to Luxemburg, Kewaunee and Casco.

Luxemburg: The trail starts near County Highway AB and parking is available along city streets.

Kewaunee: There are two trailheads in Kewaunee. The southern trailhead begins at Beardsly Street near County Highway E. The northern trailhead is near the intersection of State Highway 42 (Main Street) and Hathaway Drive. Parking is available at several locations in Kewaunee.

Camping in Wisconsin

Campgrounds in Wisconsin are as varied as the areas around them--there are forests, prairies, lakes, rivers, hills, and valleys. You'll find campgrounds, trails, historic and archaeological sites, places for solitude and places for large group gatherings. There are also Campgrounds in county parks, state parks and national forests.

A typical campsite is in a natural setting with road access, a fire ring, and a picnic table, and can be used by either vehicle or tent campers. But there also are backpack, walk-in, and canoeing -in sites, sites with electrical hookups, and sites designed specifically for either tent or vehicle campers. Some sites are accessible for people with disabilities. Some are for people with horses. National Forest - The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is located in Wisconsin's Northwoods, covering over a million and a half acres. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor, and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida, and Vilas counties.
